Tana River county boasts of the longest river in Kenya – River Tana. To fully take advantage of this resource, KSh 129 million was allocated to aquaculture development, making it the highest funded programme under the county’s fisheries sub-sector.
According to the CIDP, aquaculture – the cultivation of freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled or semi-natural conditions – provides an opportunity for increased fish production, increased quality and quantity of fish feeds, as well as improved livelihoods. The benefits of this industry can also go hand-in-hand with empowering women and youth engaged in fish farming.
